Great Falls is known for great parks greenery, and the water fall at Great Falls Park ( for which are is names). Originally Great Falls was a trading post for early colonial settlers and Indians. In the early 1800's George Washington started the unsuccessful "Patowmack Canal" which was used for transporting goods by flatbeds down the Potomac. In 1828 the canal was purchased by the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company and expanded it's potential by connecting Washington to the west. The new C& O canal was larger than its predecessor, and able to transport larger goods in a shorter time.
Today, Great Falls contains parkland and many historic sites, including the restored Colvin Run Mill and several colonial period homesteads. Because of the beautiful scenery, a private location with the Potomac River to the north, and proximity to Wolf Trap... Great Falls has become synonymous with luxury estate homes, multi million dollar mansions, and the high quality of life and location it offers. It is conveniently located close to Washington DC, Tyson's Corner, Reston, and the Dulles Tech corridor.

By road, the area is supported by the Dulles Toll road, and Route 7. Great Falls is centrally located to all in northern Virginia! Its is located within 5 miles to Wolf Trap, only 7.3 miles to Vienna, 5.4 miles to Reston, and only 7 miles to Tyson's Corner. Its central location in the northern Virginia Tech corridor, provides quick access to McLean, Langley Virginia, Washington DC and the 495 Washington Beltway.
